OpenAI's video-generating app Sora has surged past ChatGPT's initial adoption metrics, amassing 1 million downloads within its first week of limited iOS availability. The app reached 627,000 US and Canadian installs in seven days—outpacing ChatGPT's 606,000 debut week in 2022—despite operating on an invite-only basis.

Sora claimed the top spot on the US App Store by October 3, eclipsing rival AI launches like Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic’s Claude. Early data shows Canada contributed 45,000 installs, signaling strong North American demand for generative video tools. OpenAI's Bill Peebles confirmed the milestone via social media.
